Black Leaves

I don’t have much to say about this image other than I love the texture on the leaves.   As I’ve said before, any type of leaf fascinates me.  This particular tree is growing in my in-laws backyard and I’ve had multiple opportunities to capture something.  Yet the “keeper” photo has always eluded me.  My goal today was to get something that showed off that great texture and kept the composition simple.  And after around 40 shots, I finally grabbed this one.

I knew when I shot the photograph that I would convert the final image to black and white to eliminate the distraction of color.  I enhanced the “hero” leaf through levels and curves adjustments, added a slight vignette, and finally mixed in some brush and charcoal effects using Topaz Impression.  The final photograph is not perfect by any means, but it’s a keeper and I’m happy with it.

Day 320 of my 365 photo a day project.

Emotion. Mood. Feelings. This is what I capture through my photographs. Whether it is landscapes, architectural elements, still life, or macros - it is a very personal journey as my own fears, triumphs, beliefs, and shortcomings are exposed with each photo. In the end, it is all about telling compelling stories.
